The Area's Only Certified Nurse Midwife Program
St. Mary's Family Birthing Center, in cooperation with Prevea's OB/GYN department,
is the only hospital and clinic in the Green Bay area to offer certified nurse midwifes.
It's yet another personalized alternative for care at St. Mary's.
What is a Certified Nurse Midwife (CNM)?
|
Certified nurse midwives
are licensed health care professionals who are educated in both nursing and midwifery.
A CNM is a registered nurse (RN), who has graduated from an advanced program accredited
by the American College of Nurse-Midwives, usually with a master's degree in science.
CNM's must pass a national examination for certification by the American College
of Nurse-Midwives. Nurse midwives at Prevea Clinic are licensed in Wisconsin as
RN's, nurse-midwives, and advance practice nurse-prescribers. They attend continuing
education programs and keep up to date on the latest research. Care is provided
by the ACNM standards for the practice of nurse-midwifery. CNM's care emphasizes
education, healthy lifestyles and family-centered care throughout life. Their philosophy
of care is focused on the needs of the individual and family for physical care,
emotional and social support. Active involvement of client and significant others
according to cultural values and personal preferences during pregnancy and birth
is promoted.

Is a CNM right for you?
|
CNM's provide primary health care to women, with a focus on health education. You will have plenty
of time to ask your CNM questions. CNM's blend the supportive care that women expect
with the scientific knowledge needed for safe practice, which includes collaboration
with the medical team. A women's health also determines if CNM care is right for
you.
|
A CNM offers:
- Prenatal care
- Labor and delivery care in the hospital
- Care after birth
- Gynecological exams
- Breastfeeding education and support
- Assistance with family planning decisions
- Menopausal management
- Counseling in health maintenance and disease prevention
The CNM and your baby...
CNM's guide expectant mothers on a holistic journey through pregnancy and beyond.
Women can chose a CNM to provide care during their pregnancy independently or in
collaboration with Prevea obstetricians. A CNM can attend your delivery independently
within the safety of the hospital environment. CNM's have the ability to practice
low-tech deliveries, but they have the full services of the hospital available in
the event of a complication.
Marta Brace, CNM
Certified by the American College of Nurse-Midwives, Marta has over 28 years of
experience as a CNM. As a registered nurse with a master's degree from the University
of Illinois, Marta is also certified as a lactation consultant.

A CNM can guide you through a non-medicated labor if that's what you choose, but
you'll still have the option of using medication during labor. All CNM's have arrangements
with obstetricians for consultation, and a system for managing complications in
labor. Your CNM works within a team of physicians, nurse-practioners, physician
assistants, nurses and support staff to provide you with the best possible care.
CNM's strive to empower women to personalize their birthing experience. They'll
remain by your side through labor and delivery, providing support and care.
